Призрак ужаса в Вечности Вдруг восстал — безызвестный, бесплодный Весь в себе, враг всему: что за Демон Сотворил в дрожь ввергающий вакуум, Пустошь мерзкую? Молвили многие: «То Уризен!» — Но в тёмном, неведомом, В нём таилась угрюмая мощь! 2. Срок за сроком делил он и мерил Пядь за пядью мрак девятикратный Тайно, скрытно, и вот перед ним Склон пустынный разъялся на части Под порывами чёрных ветров. 3. Ибо в схватки вступать приходилось, Врукопашную биться с тенями — Порожденьями дикой пустыни — Рыб, зверей, птиц, чудовищ, стихий: Ветра, пламени, туч и тумана. 4. Dark revolving in silent activity: Unseen in tormenting passions; An activity unknown and horrible; A self-contemplating shadow, In enormous labours occupied 30  5. But Eternals beheld his vast forests Age on ages he lay, clos’d, unknown Brooding shut in the deep; all avoid The petrific abominable chaos 6. Некоторые говорили: «Это Уризен», но неизвестный, абстрагированный, Тайно размышляющий, скрывающий темную силу.

Так, перечисляя целую серию отрицатльных эпитетов, Блейк создаёт словестный портрет Уризена, угрюмого демона, добровольно изолировавшего себя от остальных членов Божественной семьи, обитающих в Вечности.

16. ...девятикратный... — термин, заимствованный Блейком у неоплатоников для выражения неполноты, в то время как число десять считалось совершенным (Стивенсон 255).

34-42. Хладный ужас безмолвья... и далее — описание по своей мрачности напоминает раннее стихотворение Блейка «К Зиме» (To Winter).

Глава II. Уризен создаёт законы.

43. Ни Земли, ни шаров тяготенья / Мир не знал... — Блейк не соглашался с искусственными ограничениями, а также с системой Ньютона, по которой закон всемирного тяготения действует во всей Вселенной. В Вечности, считал Блейк, расширение, сужение и прочие изменения зависит не от законов физики, но от желаний Бессмертных.

51. Услыхав зов трубы, сонм Бессмертных... — эта строка стёрта в Копии A.
