On design:

Sector E plate Illustration:

Four human figures, probably representing the first four sons of Urizen, inhabit a compartmented landscape of sea, land, sky, and heavens. These sons of Urizen correspond to the classical elements of fire, air, earth, and water: "first Thiriel appear'd . . . Like a man from a cloud born, & Utha / From the waters emerging . . . Grodna rent the deep earth howling . . . then Fuzon / Flam'd out" (Plate 22, lines 14-22). Clockwise from the top: (1) Fire/Fuzon: A figure in flames, probably male, hovers horizontally, facing out toward the viewer with arms raised between the horizontal and 135 degrees. His position and the curved lower edge of the space he occupies suggest the sun. (2) Air/Thiriel: Just below Fire, with nude body in an upward curve that reinforces the suggestion of a sun above, hovers a second figure, apparently male, with his hands raised to his chest and palms turned out. A halo surrounds his head. Between these upper two figures and the lower two is a horizontal line of cloud. (3) Earth/Grodna: At lower right crouches a nude male with short hair, head up, mouth open, and hands on the ground. He seems to be emerging from the earth, represented by a wave- washed island or peninsula of land. (4) Water/Utha: At lower left, the upward-looking head of a long-haired figure of uncertain sex, but apparently male, emerges from the water. At the horizon is an area of light edged with beams that suggests another sun, this one rising or setting.

Component (Sector AB)

Keywords: Fuzon male fire flame-like hair hovering facing forward arms raised horizontally arms raised at 135 degrees hands raised, palms out mouth open

A figure in flames (with flame-like hair), probably male, hovers horizontally, facing out toward the viewer with arms and hands upraised between the horizontal and 135 degrees, palms out. His mouth is open. He apparently represents one of the first sons of Urizen, Fuzon, and the classical element fire. The curved shape delimited by the top two figures suggests the sun.

Component (Sector AB)

Keywords: fire sun

Flames envelop a hovering male figure, Fuzon/fire. Their shape helps to suggest the sun, though there is another sun at the horizon below.

Component (Sector AB)

Keywords:

Thiriel male nude curly hair short hair leg bent at knee hovering facing forward facing right mouth open hands raised, palms out arms bent body horizontal air halo

Just below the figure of Fuzon/fire, with nude body in an upward curve that reinforces the suggestion of a sun above, hovers a figure apparently male, with short, curly hair, mouth open, and hands raised, palms out. A halo surrounds his head. He apparently represents one of the first sons of Urizen, Thiriel, and the classical element air.

Component (Sector E)

Keywords: cloud

A line of cloud divides the top two figures from the bottom two.

Component (Sector E)

Keywords: sky

An area of sky cut by a horizontal cloud is the transitional zone between fire and air (above) and water and earth (below).

Component (Sector CD) Keywords:

Grodna male nude facing forward rising contracted crouching arms down arms braced hands on ground short hair mouth open earth knee A nude male with short hair, head up, mouth open, and hands on the ground crouches, positioned as if emerging from the earth. He apparently represents one of the first sons of Urizen, Grodna, and the classical element earth.

Component (Sector CD)

Keywords: island peninsula earth

Grodna emerges from the surface of a wave-washed island or peninsula of land.

Component (Sector C)

Keywords: sea water waves

The head of Utha emerges from an area of dark water, which washes up in waves on an area of land.

Component (Sector C)

Keywords: Utha male head long hair head up head bent back looking facing forward water

The upward-looking head of a long-haired figure of uncertain sex, but apparently male, emerges from the water. He seems to be one of the first sons of Urizen, Utha, and the classical element water.

Component (Sector C)

Keywords: sun sunrise sunset beams of light

At the horizon over the head of Utha at bottom left is a rising or setting sun suggested by an area of light edged with beams, though a second sun is suggested by the fiery shapes at the top of the design.
