Shudd’ring, the Eternal Prophet smote With a stroke, from his north to south region The bellows & hammer are silent now 280  A nerveless silence, his prophetic voice Siez’d; a cold solitude & dark void The Eternal Prophet & Urizen clos’d 5. Ages on ages rolld over them Cut off from life & light frozen Into horrible forms of deformity Los suffer’d his fires to decay Then he look’d back with anxious desire But the space undivided by existence Struck horror into his soul. 290  6. Los wept obscur’d with mourning: His bosom earthquak’d with sighs; He saw Urizen deadly black, In his chains bound, & Pity began, 7. Глава 5. Падение и разделение Лоса.

262-263. Труд закончен. Лос выронил в ужасе... — в отличие от библейского Бога («И увидел Бог, что это хорошо» см. Бытие 1:10), довольного своим творением, Лос в ужасе от него.

264-265. И огни его с отвращеньем / Члены мощные скрыли в дыму... — огонь, элемент Вечности, представляющий здесь «творческое горение» Лоса, персонифицируется и выражает своё негативное отношение к созданию телесной бренной формы Уризена.

267. Бессмертный... — здесь имеется в виду Уризен.

285. В мерзких формах они обретались... — Лос, творя телесную форму Уризена, как бы объединяется с ним, и тем самым становясь его частью.

286-301. Лос страдал — он утратил огонь... — Лос, уставший от трудов, скорбит об утрате своего огня, страстно желая вернуть прошлое, испытывая жалость и сострадание к своему творению — Уризену, скованному узами плоти. Жалость оказывается жизнетворной и, раздваивая душу, она порождает водопад жизни, струи которого, спрессовывая пустоту, становятся его собственными нервами. И вот, в пустом пространстве уже появляется дрожащий кровавый шар.

295. Ибо жалость рвёт душу на части... — букв. «...ибо жалость разделяет душу...» (For pity divides the soul...) повторено Блейком в поэме «Мильтон» с добавлением «и лишает человека мужества»:

...ведь жалость душу разделяет И мужества мужей лишает

Sector AB interlinear Illustration: A vine, sprouting flowers off the central stem, separates the two columns of text from one another. Its tendrils and leaves, some serpentine or flame-like, are extended to fill the spaces between some of the stanzas and around short lines. Some bits of the vegetation are independent of the central stem.
