Before a paneled door raked diagonally by a shadow, a child in a full gown stands facing forward with his hands raised as if in prayer. Behind him, a dog, perhaps "The Dog at the wintry door" (Plate 25, line 3), stretched out in front of the door holds its head raised vertically as if howling.
