Letter 5 from Herschkowitz As chance happened, we met Herschkowitz in the street on 25th October. He told us about a concert that he had attended on the previous day at the Bolshoi Hall of the Conservatoire. This concert was dedicated to the works of Moscow composers, and it included the Serenade by Mikhail Meyerovich, the Durer-Concerto by Igor Golubev and From the Story of the Temporal Years by Georgy Dmitriev. He described Golubev and Dmitriev as ‘talented people’, and we noticed that Herschkowitz, who had until now openly declared that he was ‘closed’ to the music of today, was intrigued. We were surprised that there was no habitual scepticism in his words, but later he decided to explain his position in a letter: “What is it possible to say about Dmitriev and Golubev? They are, in the fullest sense of the word, talented people, who have become highly proficient in composer’s skill. However, they are not composers! They are theatre-directors of a very high level – theatre-directors, who have replaced actors and scenery with sound. They have made a big step forward compared to Ioseliani, who stated that an actor and a chair are equal elements within his work. Remarkably, Dmitriev and Golubev rejected the actor and the chair like useless scrap, and filled the freed space with a great technique of the use of sound mimicry. Nevertheless, by this method they castrated either music from time, or time from music. Their souls have the same huge Achilles’ heel, like the souls of those who, by their abstractions, turned theatre into a concrete low farce. Dmitriev and Golubev turned time of their works into a reception room that one can leave by one’s own judgement! And judgement for them – like beads and a thread; sometimes they have more beads than the thread needs, and sometimes the opposite… However, for a master (I mean a Great Master) music is time, and time is music! This is why, dear Lena and Dima, I try to turn your attention on something. Herschkowitz. 25 October 1983, Moscow – Moscow.”
