О Сновиденьи Ульро![2] и о переходе
К Вечной Смерти! и о пробужденьи к Вечной Жизни —
Об этом был мне сон за ночью ночь и каждым утром,
И, пробудившись на заре, Спасителя я зрел —
5 В лучах любви он диктовал слова сей песни нежной:
«Проснись! о, сном забывшийся в краю теней, раздайся грудью,
В тебе я, ты во мне — в любви небесной мы едины:
Волокнами любви объят весь край прекрасный Альбиона;
Лишь в Саррей под холмами в Атлантической долине
10 Скопились воды чёрные; о, Альбион, вернись!
Отцы зовут тебя, собратья и сыны,
Кормилицы и сёстры, матери и дщери,
Оплакивая дух больной, Взор замутнённый твой:
И Эманация твоя, и дщери больше не резвятся,
15 Лучась перед твоей Божественной Душой.
Где Эманацию сокрыл ты — Иерусалим —
От глаз Святого, от его творящей плоти?
Я далеко не Бог, я брат и друг,
В твоей груди живу я, ты живёшь во мне;
20 И мы — одно, прощая зло, не требуем награды!
И вы все, спящие в стране теней Беуле[3] — часть моя!»[4]
Но беспокойный Человек[5], сойдя в долины мрака,
[Твердит: «Мы не одно, нас много, ты — само притворство,]
Фантом разгорячённого ума, ты тень бессмертья,
25 Как жертву, душу вяжешь ты мою своей любовью,
Здесь каждый — враг другого в дружбе, порождённой ложью,
Но не такая Иерусалим; о дщерях — не скажу:
Живут не только верой, но и внешним изъявленьем.
Здесь горы все мои, и я храню их для себя!
30 И Малверн-хиллс и Чевиот и Плинлимон, и Сноудон[6] —
Мои! На них я возведу Моральный свой Закон!
Гуманности не будет — только власть, война, победа!» —
Рек Альбион в ревнивом страхе, Иерусалим сокрыв
Меж Медуэй[7] и Темзой — реками Беулы, и пред троном
35 Божественным зло затаивший, мрачный и холодный.

Chap: I
Of the Sleep of Ulro! and of the passage through
Eternal Death! and of the awaking to Eternal Life.
This theme calls me in sleep night after night, & ev'ry morn
Awakes me at sun-rise, then I see the Saviour over me
5Spreading his beams of love, & dictating the words of this mild song.
Awake! awake O sleeper of the land of shadows, wake! expand!
I am in you and you in me, mutual in love divine:
Fibres of love from man to man thro Albions pleasant land.
In all the dark Atlantic vale down from the hills of Surrey
10A black water accumulates, return Albion! return!
Thy brethren call thee, and thy fathers, and thy sons,
Thy nurses and thy mothers, thy sisters and thy daughters
Weep at thy souls disease, and the Divine Vision is darkend:
Thy Emanation that was wont to play before thy face,
15Beaming forth with her daughters into the Divine bosom [Where!!]
Where hast thou hidden thy Emanation lovely Jerusalem
From the vision and fruition of the Holy-one?
I am not a God afar off, I am a brother and friend;
Within your bosoms I reside, and you reside in me:
20Lo! we are One; forgiving all Evil; Not seeking recompense!
Ye are my members O ye sleepers of Beulah, land of shades!
But the perturbed Man away turns down the valleys dark;
[Saying. We are not One: we are Many, thou most simulative]
Phantom of the over heated brain! shadow of immortality!
25Seeking to keep my soul a victim to thy Love! which binds
Man the enemy of man into deceitful friendships:
Jerusalem is not! her daughters are indefinite:
By demonstration, man alone can live, and not by faith.
My mountains are my own, and I will keep them to myself!
30The Malvern and the Cheviot, the Wolds Plinlimmon & Snowdon
Are mine. here will I build my Laws of Moral Virtue!
Humanity shall be no more: but war & princedom & victory!
So spoke Albion in jealous fears, hiding his Emanation
Upon the Thames and Medway, rivers of Beulah: dissembling
35His jealousy before the throne divine, darkening, cold!
