Мир — театр;
В нем женщины, мужчины, все — актеры;
У каждого есть вход и выход свой,
И человек один и тот же роли
Различные играет в пьесе, где
Семь действий есть. Сначала он ребенок,
Пищащий и ревущий на руках
У нянюшки; затем — плаксивый школьник,
С блистающим, как утро дня, лицом
И с сумочкой ползущий неохотно
Улиткою в училище; затем
Любовник он, вздыхающий как печка
Балладой жалостною в честь бровей
Возлюбленной своей; затем он воин,
Обросший бородой, как леопард,
Наполненный ругательствами, честью
Ревниво дорожащий и задорный.
За мыльным славы пузырем готовый
Влезть в самое орудия жерло.
Затем уже он судия, с почтенным
Животиком, в котором каплуна
Отличного запрятал, с строгим взором,
С остриженной красиво бородой,
Исполненный мудрейших изречений
И аксиом новейших — роль свою
Играет он. В шестом из этих действий
Является он тощим паяцем,
С очками на носу и с сумкой сбоку;
Штаны его, что юношей еще
Себе он сшил, отлично сохранились,
Но широки безмерно для его
Иссохших ног; а мужественный голос,
Сменившийся ребяческим дискантом,
Свист издает пронзительно-фальшивый.
Последний акт, кончающий собой
Столь полную и сложную исторью,
Есть новое младенчество — пора
